4Solid vehicle combat with only minor issuesNov 15, 2006

Out of nowhere this game comes out for the PSP. My store couldn't keep a copy of the game in stock and I had to actually search my area for two copies. This raises the question... Is this game really that great? For the most part - I'll tell you why.

The game is only $30 at release which is understandable because it's strictly a vs. game with no story. Battlezone gets right to the point, dropping you and other hover tanks into arenas for some frantic action. There are other modes of play but they all lead to the same vs. arenas. You can go for single player matches, single player tournaments, or ad-hoc (you and some friends in a room, no internet multi player) multi player. You get basically every game type you've been used to such as death match, capture the flag, etc. The single player tournament mode is where you go to unlock all of the extra upgrades called tweaks for your tanks. This mode also unlocks new tanks, tank weight classes, arenas, and primary weapons. Let me also mention that each country has a different tank and special weapon which is a good reason to try each of the different country's tank. The computer can be relentless at times, putting up a pretty good fight. So, don't expect to unlock everything the game has to offer in a single sitting.

The control is pretty tight after you get used to how the different weight classes move around. Levels are laid out with weapons and environmental effects to use which aid in your quest to take out your foes. (Also there is an online "level editor" which lets you only edit the location of these pickups and environmental effects. They can be saved to the PSP memory card for use in multi player) The tanks hover well over the terrain and with the use of L and R buttons for strafe, control and aim are made easier. The game locks on to the closest tank for weapon fire, indicated by a red circle showing a lock. Moving around will take a little practice but the game has a short learning curve making it pick up and play friendly to just about anyone.

Graphically the game boasts photo realistic backgrounds and some cool effects. Of course this is back of the box material that when actually playing isn't quite the case. The arenas themselves are detailed enough but not distractingly so to where you'll stare off at the sky and think "wow, that's photorealistic!" while getting the ever-living blown out of your tank. Simply put, the graphics are somewhat simple but they get the job done. Weapon effects are nice but again still somewhat generic. I'm actually a fan of the menu interface they give you where you scroll sideways through your choices. Every weapon is represented with an icon/description and each tank has multiple camo schemes which are just different paint jobs to choose from.

So overall the game sounds cool right? Honestly, it is in short bursts. It's not a bad way to kill a few minutes but the action will wear quickly after about 20 minutes of play because of its repetitive nature. If you were a fan of the previous installments of the Battlezone games, or any vehicle based combat game I highly recommend looking into this title. For the casual gamer though, this is a short game with not much to offer except the arena battles. Based on this information, I hope you can make a wise purchase choice this holiday season.

4a quick pick-up and blow-up gameApr 06, 2010

i got this game when it first came out, and it got broken over time, and bought it a second time. the reason you may ask? simple, its an amazingly simple, fun, and addicting game. with 8 different countries to give you a special 'weapon/ability', along with 3 different tank types (asp for people who like to move fast and be a small target, cabal for medium size and armor with plenty of different weapons, and titan for a big heavily armed and armor tank with devastating weapons at the cost of speed) and each tank has about 6 different weapons specific to that type of tank, meaning 18 different weapons in total not including nation weapons.

the story mode for this game is short, but not without its rewards for completing it. every few matches you complete unlocks 'mods' for your tank that allow you to specialize your tank to your play style, and you can have different mods for each of your 3 tanks and save the settings. like you can run an asp that specializes in reloading your special weapon faster and maximizing speed or weapons damage, then mod your titan for splash damage, longer lock distances for your weapons, and longer pick up durations and the like. you can have 3 'mods' selected for each tank allowing you to make your tanks mission specific in case your enemies are getting the upper hand and need to re-prioritize your settings. and just simple multiplayer with the computer is enjoyable, but you get the most bang for your buck when playing against your friends online. and you can even use a 'cheat' to increase the player cap from 4 to 6 in multiplayer (just be forewarned that the game might slow down some when playing ad hoc multiplayer with a cap of 6, especially with the 1k and 2k series psp)

but overall this game is really fun, and with 5 different mulitplayer mission types (black out and lonewolf are a blast and usually quick, then you have deathmatch, team deathmatch, and i cant remember the special name for the capture and control type) and with ai settings and score caps being adjustable, it will match your abilities well for your experience.

2Not much to this gameAug 28, 2007

This is basically an Unreal Tournament clone with tanks. No single player experience to speak of. A waste of money.
