The Genesis was released in 1989 at a time when Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on home consoles. At that time, Sega had a lot of hits in the arcade such as After Burner and Golden Axe, and part of the appeal of the Genesis was that now these games were not only playable at home but were fairly close to the arcade versions. This system, however, didn't get a lot of publicity until Sonic the Hedgehog debuted in 1991. This game not only gave the Genesis a much needed mascot, but also showed that it could generate some spectacular graphics, animation and sound-- all with incredible speed. Each player has individual ratings in scoring, blocking, rebounding and steals, so choose the right balance of firepower and get ready to compete against a friend or the computer.

As you play the game, a referee will call all violations and fouls, so you might have to make substitutions from your team's five-man bench.

Other notable features include penalties, three levels of play (beginner, normal or superstar), adjustable minutes per quarter (from three to twelve), four defensive levels (loose, standard, tight or last-ditch) and an option to have the screen fade or change instantly as you move from basket to basket.

A password system allows players to continue tournament progress at a later time.
