What's your zombie plan?Feb 18, 2010 This game is great for preparation of a zombie apocalypse... You'll be sorry when it happens! jk =p Almost everything in this game can be used as a weapon against the hordes or zombies that come to attack you. This game is base on the notion that they are slow moving and stupid rather than running after you and what not. There are more than just zombies in this game to keep you busy such as boss battles with psychopaths and lots of people to save and bring back to your safehouse. Just a note but this game is hard to beat at first and you will probably die trying. But it's meant to be that way. You can end the game where it is or continue from a savepoint when you die... if you continue from a previous save you do just that. But if you end and save the game, you can start up a new game and keep the level and costume that you have on from the last game you ended. If it's too hard then just keep playing and leveling your guy up until you're at a level that makes you more agile and able to carry more weapons and have more special moves to use on the zombies and psychopaths... in short this is a great zombie survival/rescue game that's even fun to pick up once in a while and just run zombies down in cars or lawnmowers or with a mall bench... Good stuff for zombie lovers! (Note: Also when you get the game you might want to change the camera aim controls... It's default puts the camera facing the character when you aim a gun but you can change it to where when you push the aim button it will aim in the direction you already have the camera in...)
Bleh.Feb 13, 2010 I'm a huge zombie fan. I'm also a huge gamer. I finally got around to picking up Dead Rising and was ready to kill some mindless zombies. Sadly, I didn't know I was going to be plagued with terrible AI and terrible save system. The aim system is just awful and the timed missions were getting in the way of my slaughtering of the horde. You have the option to save survivors on the way except the are as about as intelligent as the rotting corpses shambling through the mall. Rather then follow you they'd rather just stand in the middle of a swarm of the undead and yell for help. The boss battles can range from mind numbingly easy to throw your paddle at the wall hard. The weapon system is alright, but it seems you only get a few kills from melee weapons before they break and only a few shots with your gun which is pitiful to aim. This game was alright but I found myself more frustrated then enjoying this game. Rather then being plagued by the undead I found myself plagued by horrible AI and a horrendous save system which will have you giving up on this game. Save as much as you can because if you accidentally run into a psychopath and get killed you will find that you've just wasted a few hours on nothing. Bleh.
Spent many, many hours playing this game.Feb 07, 2010 This game has its faults - but it's amazing.
It begins with 72 Hour Mode. This features the main storyline with side missions mixed throughout. Most of the objectives are called in from "Otis" the groundskeeper. Or janitor. Whatever he is, you may grow to loath this man. He calls you on the radio an annoying number of times. Exploring these missions you will encounter people that you may choose to save. Sometimes you will stumble on someone randomly. Rescuing survivors gives you a lot of experience points, so it's a good idea. There are 50 experience levels the main character must go through to achieve a proper measure of bad ass. As you level up your health bars increase, as well as your inventory, and you learn new zombie destruction moves. The number of zombies is pretty amazing. Especially if you get down in to the parking structure/tunnels. There are so many weapons to use in this game it's sort of ridiculous. Some of them do way more damage than they should. Still - it's awesome taking out hordes of the undead by hurling diamonds and other fine stones at them. Beating folks with a guitar, unlocking and using the Mega-Man gun, the bowling ball head crusher. The soccer ball is insanely funny especially when you use it on a group of survivors that you are escorting.
There are multiple different endings to this game. I believe there are five, but could be remembering incorrectly. Once you've done the Main ending the storyline will continue with "Overtime Mode". Without spoilers - In this mode you run around the mall seeking out certain items of the utmost importance. This time zombies are not the biggest threat.
Once you've completed Overtime Mode and seen the true ending you will have unlocked "Infinity Mode". Who knows how many days I've logged on this game, but wanting the achievements will require a lot of hours. One of the reasons being that in Infinity Mode - you cannot save... ever. 2 hours real time is 24 hours in-game time. For the "7 Day Survivor" achievement your Xbox will be on for a minimum of 14 hours. In this mode your health drains constantly and you must roam the mall seeking out other survivors to destroy them and steal their supplies! Getting the correct books from the bookstores will allow you to maximize the effectiveness of health items. You must eat every 15 - 20 minutes or you die. There are also books that prevent weapons from breaking quickly which you will need if you're going to go Rambo on zomboids as I do.
As far as gripes, I have 3:
1. The load screens. There are quite a few of them. Though they load quickly - it's noticeable to a fault in a few parts when you have to jump between areas.
2. The save system. Dear goodness - probably the scariest thing in this game. You can only save by traveling to either a bathroom - or to the Security Room. Overtime Mode has a different save point. Infinity Mode offers NO SAVE POINTS. To unlock one of the best weapons in the game - The Lightsaber - you need the "7 Day Survivor" achievement.
3. Otis. I wish that it would allow you to just murder him right when the game starts, or at least steal the batteries from his radio. He calls you so many times! So, so many times.

In the end, beyond the gripes and groans, this game has become one of my all-time favorites. In a way it's like playing out your own twisted version of Dawn of the Dead. If Zombies are your thing, check out this game and go medieval.

Horde of FrustrationFeb 06, 2010 Dead Rising has plenty of potential for fun. The characters are dynamic, the environment is detailed, and the game's "gimmick" of being able to use just about anything as a weapon is very enjoyable. Unfortunately, you'll have to wade through a few layers of aggravation before you'll be able to really have fun with it.
You start the game with a very small amount of health, and you'll only be able to shake off a zombie about four times without healing before you're dead. Provided, that is, that you can figure out how to shake off the zombie at all. The instruction manual doesn't specifically tell you how to do that, and the in-game tutorial won't come early enough, either.
There's also a good reason for why there are so many things you can use as weapons in this game. You'll run out of ammo quickly, and your melee weapons will break much faster than you expect them to. As the game progresses, you'll learn unarmed skills that will make this situation easier to deal with... but early in the game, it's just another source of annoyance.
The bottom line is, this is a very sharp learning curve and there is NO WAY to change the difficulty setting. You need to be prepared to watch your character die FREQUENTLY before you feel even remotely comfortable with the game's quirks. Some players will find that their patience will be rewarded. Others will just get a sudden, urgent need to load up a game that's less frustrating.
