Better than the reviews I read.Jul 02, 2010 Great Seller, game arrived in perfect condition.
I actually played FEAR 2 first and enjoyed that game very much so I was itching to get the first one to see how it all started. I read many reviews which talked about the PS3 version of this game having poor graphics compared to the PC and X-box 360. I haven't seen it on either but considering this game was top of the line when it came out in 2005 I thought the graphics were pretty good even by current standards. I also heard the levels were monotonous in style and hard to navigate. I disagree on both counts. I didn't have trouble getting through the levels and as for monotonous design; you spend most of your time in a giant corporate building. If you've ever been in a hospital you know this is how buildings tend to end up being on a large scale. That being said there was plenty of variety in the scenery. Definitely worth the buy if you plan on playing through the series especially considering FEAR 3 comes out this October.
Excellent game..Does have some problemsFeb 20, 2010 This was the 2nd game that I finished on my PS3--the first being Half Life 2 on the Orange Box. This is a great game for FPS fans and delivers plenty of scares and jumps. Like Half Life 2, you have to deal with a flashlight that only lasts about 20 seconds or so. Although this is gimicky, it adds an intensity to the game as you don't want to use the flashlight unless you absolutely have to as you don't want to find yourself getting attacked in the dark. They took this part out of F.E.A.R. 2 which I was grateful for at first and then kind of missed as a lot of the suspense gets taken out once the flashlight works all the time. Admittedly, the graphics of this game cannot be compared to the sequel. Not even in the same category but perfectly adequate when combined with great shooting mechanics. There are a variety of cool high tech guns(that nail gun is still one of my favorite guns all time and that sniping laser gun--WOW!!) Also the slow-mo function never gets old. Blasting through 5 guys in 6 seconds and watching them slowly fall to the ground as their limbs fly off just never gets old. The only real negative is the loading times and the fact you are fighting the same enemies through the entire game. If you die, you literally wait close to 30 to 40 seconds to respawn. YOu get to hate the waits so much that you will change the difficulty down to easy just so you don't get killed!! (BTW, every game should let you change the difficulty on the fly) Overall, for what this game is selling for right now, I can still recommend it highly. Also pick up the sequel as it fixes nearly every problem with this game and has a larger variety of enemies. Plus you get to drive Mech!! Nuff said.
3.5 stars - Fun but not greatFeb 08, 2010 It's a decent game, good for some fun playing time. Worth it if you can pick it up for close to $20.
Didn't try online play, so this review is only based on the campaign.
The Good:
- Interesting plot, but lots of holes.
- Fun.
- Some good creepy moments. Even made me jump a few times.
- Bonus level and several challenge levels. Good for some replay value.
- Decent campaign length. Took quite a bit longer to finish than Modern Warfare 2, although I guess that's not saying much. Bottom line, I don't think anyone will be feel cheated on this aspect of the game.
The Bad:
- Just OK graphics, yet poor frame rate. You can turn down the head bobbing, but it still gave me a headache.
- CRAPPY CONTROLS!!! They give a few different layout options, but primary fire is always R2. Most FPS games have primary fire mapped to R1. At the very least, we should be able to change it! The is a peeve of mine, and accounts for 1 full star deduction.
- Terrible directional sound! When enemies are close by, you can hear their footsteps, except most times they come from some random direction! For some reason, your own footsteps also sound like they're coming from a particular direction. WTF???
- Dialog is way too soft! I had the dialog turned up all the way, and everything else turned all the way down. There were still some spots where I couldn't clearly make out the dialog.
- If you care about trophies, there aren't any.
- Crappy friendly AI in the bonus level. The guy likes to stop in the middle of a doorway and doesn't move out of your way. Useless!
All bad things are true but the game is funOct 18, 2009 I agree with most bad reviews about graphics and so but I played the whole game and I enjoyed it quite a lot. I didnt find it scary though but the AI is unbelievable ! I would not give it 5 starts but definitely not 1, its a decent game and the price now makes it worth trying.
Fun!Oct 17, 2009 I play a lot of first-person shooters, and, although this game's graphics don't compare well to newer same-generation-console games, this game is still tons of fun. Since that's why I play games, I gave this game 5 stars since it is as much fun or more fun than the others. It has a perfect feel to it, good enemy AI, and a really good balance between being too difficult and too easy. Fun!
