5A little plot heavy at timesAug 26, 2010
Overall FF8 was just a great experience to play. It was long enough and provided enough challenge to stay interesting. Weirdly enough, i really liked the junction system because if you could understand it (which is admittedly harder than it seems) the actual fighting is so much easier, and its rare for a game to really reward meticulous planning to this extent. Junctions also minimize the annoyance of picking characters for your main party, since the root of the characters strength came from the junctions and not them themselves, so they could be interchanged much easier than in most other Final fantasies. My biggest problem with this game was that there were definitely some parts where it was hard to go on. Long drawn out scenes of plot development or emotions. Don't get me wrong, i love a good romantic subplot, but i also don't need to spend 20 minutes pushing X as people float through space. With that being said, i still loved the story and my complaints are usually about small details instead of actual problems. The only thing that i didn't really understand was that once you start the last dungeon, you cant visit anything on the map besides chocobo forests. Plot-wise, i understand why but it was still a bit of a unwarned about nuisance.

5Not The Best Final Fantasy Game But......Aug 02, 2010
I Bought This Game To Continue With My Final Fantasy Collection And To Have A Game To Play During Summer So I Got This. When I First Got The Game I Was Very Excited (It Also Had A Good Packaging) And I Started The Game And After I Saw That Little Intro That Showed Some Screenshots Of The Game And Also The Names Of Some Of The People Who Worked On It I Was Happy. But Then I Started A New Game And Another Intro Comes Out, Holy Mother Of God Was The Second Intro Awesome It Shows Rinoa And Edea (The Lead Female Character And The Other One Of The Villains) Minding Their Own Business, And Then It Shows Squall And Seifer (Main Character And His Rival) Having An Epic Battle While A Great Musical Piece Entitled "Liberi Fatali" Plays In The Background And The Game Starts. From Then On You Start Playing The Game I'm Not Gonna Spoil Anything Else About The Story But It's Very Interesting (Unlike FFV) The Characters Are Also Likable Although A Little Cliched At Times (Unlike FFV) The Music Is Awesome In Every Way And It Entertains While You Spend Hours Walking And Fighting (FFV Had Good Music No Complaints There) The Gameplay Was My Only Problem With This Game It's Just Not As Exciting As FFIV,VI And VII But I Liked The Costumizing System (Junction System) I Also Disliked The Fact That You Learn Spells By Finding Them On The Floor And You Can Buy New Weapons By Reading Magazines And Some Of The Summonings (GF In This Game) Are In The Most Unexpected Places Too Rookies Might Have A Hard Time Looking For These Things But Overall I Highly Recommend This Game To Any Final Fantasy Fan, And Some RPG Fans Too, Enjoy

5Companies don't make games like this anymore....Jul 27, 2010
I absolutely love this game! This game doesn't even compare to ff13. Square Enix does not make games like this anymore.

4Why hate on eight?Jul 12, 2010
Final Fantasy 8 is shunned by most final fantasy fans. It does not have a memorable story as Final Fantasy VII, but it is entertaining. First off it uses Guardian Forces (GFs) which level up and become powerful. It is wise to use one per character, so they become fond of the character making them more powerful. It also has unique weapons and an unlimited magic system. Now for the bad you have to draw magic from enemies and can only hold 99 of a certain spell and i think a total of 40 different spells. It may sound good, but when you get to the middle of the game you can't hold more spells. The limits are random, some people say press circle whole your life is critical, but i find it hard to use.
Overall the game is fun, the story is about love, betrayal and saving the world. FF VIII is a fun game and deserves to be played by any Final Fantasy fan or RPGer.

4FFVIII RedeemedJul 07, 2010
I was that 16 year old kid who loathed Final Fantasy VIII (when it was originally released) for every reason that made it unlike Final Fantasy VII. I still prefer VII in nearly every regard, but recently I purchased VIII to play on my PS3 and PSP. I've finally gotten around to playing it thanks to this wonderful recession (read: I'm now unemployed) and have put nearly 70 hours into the game in a week and a half.

The story is relatively mundane: evil sorceress turns out to not be all that bad, but another evil sorceress is actually evil. The foreshadowing phones in all of the supposed twists and turns, but that's okay. The characters are fully realized and have depth and emotion, but when it comes to battle you really don't need to use any of the females because all of their limit breaks are worthless when compared to Squall, Zell and Irvine (Quistis' limit breaks are occasionally useful).

The junction system is wonderfully complex, but when you have figured it out in conjunction with Triple Triad (a card mini-game) then FFVIII becomes too easy. Seriously. I'm on disc three and none of my characters are over level 25 and I'm not even trying to do a low level game. The battle system discourages leveling up which is in stark contrast to FFVII where I fought tooth and nail to get all of my characters to level 99 before the end of the first disc (for story related reasons I wanted to be a completionist to the nth degree). TANGENT! back to FFVIII.

Not only does this game discourage leveling up, it discourages using magic, using guardian forces (in battle)... This game discourages playing it as though it were any other Final Fantasy. I love it.

The short of it: Intimidatingly complex junction system gives way to a joyously refined magic and battle system once you get passed the learning curve. The graphics are great for the PSX (PSone for you noobs), the story is a little weak, the characters are worthwhile and the sheer amount of things to do in the game is great. To all of those used-to-be-16's who formerly hated this game: give it another shot, it may not be as good as FFVII or Xenogears, but it's definitely a worthwhile adventure. It's certainly better than 90% of the RPG's available for the current generation of consoles.
