5BUY IT!!!Nov 02, 2010
By Binh L. Tran
I have been a big fan of hack and slash and the God of War series is on the top of the list. GOW3 was great but nothing too special overall for me. GoS on the other hand blew me away! It just amazes me how ReadyatDawn is able to produce such a game on the 5 year ols PSP engine. The game is beautiful and runs amazingly smooth with a lot of stuff going on. You just need to see for yourself. This game blows away CoO, which was my favorite PSP game until GoS arrived. I dare say this game looks better then most of the PS2 games out there and even better then some PS3 games! Its that great!

Aside from the awesome graphics, the gameplay and story is great and appropriate as a side adventure. The length, which was lacking on CoO is extended and will set you back around 10 hours. What else can I say but get this game NOW if you are remotely interested. You can thank me later.

5Fall In Love With Your PSP AgainNov 03, 2010
By Stephen "Stephen"
Who am I? I'm a 29 year-old who is busy trying to be successful in life. I try to play games, but truth be told, I go for months on end without ever touching a game. Thankfully, this game has -- temporarily, at least -- snapped me out of the "GO GO GO!" phase in my life. As a matter of fact, the release of this game made me go all-out, trade in my plain black PSP and get the God of War: Ghost of Sparta entertainment pack (which I also wrote a review about and can be found here: PSP Limited Edition God of War: Ghost of Sparta Entertainment Pack ) which has a truly bad-ass red and black PSP 3000 in it (along with some other goodies). This game has single-handedly made me fall in love with my PSP again. I've been playing this game non-stop since I bought it (so much so that the friggin' batteries ran out on me one time)! Although I'm not finished with the game (and I honestly have no idea how far through it I am since there's never really been a gauge for just how far you are in the God of War PSP games), I'll go through and list what I personally find to be the pros and cons of this game:

PROS:

This game is insanely fun. I know that's a generic pro, but I haven't been able to sit down and play a game for hours on end in a very long time. And even though the voice actor for Kratos comes off a bit cheesy in his delivery sometimes, the story is very compelling and actually makes you want to watch the cut scenes (when is the last time you actually wanted to sit through the cut scenes in a game!?). There's one part of this game that is one of the most awesome parts I've played in a game in quite a while. It's basically like you're sky diving in an enemy chase scene, but that's all I'm going to say. The point is, once you pick this game up, you're not going to want to put it down.

Being a musician and an audiophile, I'm hyper-aware of the music and ambient sounds in a game. With that said, I'm happy to report that the music and ambiance are stellar. The quality of the music in certain places sounds like it's a low bit rate if you're playing through the PSP speakers, so you will get that slight watery/digital-sounding effect but it's all in the low quality speakers of the PSP and not something that is made readily apparent unless you have the volume turned all the way up. If you play this game using headphones, you will be completely immersed and met with stellar audio quality!

Lastly, the controls are awesome. They may take you a bit to get used to insofar as button combinations and when you have to quickly press specific buttons during big enemy conflicts, but one of the best features they added to this game was where on the screen they list for you to hit specific buttons when you're supposed to hit them. For instance, when fighting a big enemy, you may have to press a certain series of buttons. When it shows which button on the screen you're to press, the location of the button on the screen corresponds with where the button is physically located on your PSP. For example, if you're supposed to press 'O', it will show a 'O' on the right side of the screen. If you're supposed to press 'X', it will show it at the bottom-center of the screen. If you're supposed to use the analog joystick, it will show it in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen and so on and so forth. Very intuitive and great usability implementation.

Lastly, there are tons of combinations readily available to use. If you get tired of killing your enemies using a specific pattern, there are plenty of other options for you to choose from. Oh, and it really goes without saying that the graphics are absolutely fantastic. There's some obvious aliasing going on, but that's to be expected. I had the graphics get slightly sluggish on me just once, but I'd say I'm probably about half-way through the game at this point and have yet to experience that again, so everything with this game checks out wonderfully so far.

CONS:

The only cons I have are personal nit-picky ones. For instance, sometimes, I can't quite tell if I'm damaging a larger enemy or not. I seem to recall this being an issue for me in God of War: Chains of Olympus as well. Additionally, for those of you gamers out there who are perfectionists and try at all costs not to die even so much as ONCE, you can kiss that goal goodbye with this game even if only for the fact that your path isn't always 100% clear right off the bat in this game. There are certain places where you're going to fall off or not get a sequence of buttons correct the first time, etc. And that's fine -- it's all a part of the experience. So, like I said, no real cons; just a bunch of subjective stuff.

Overall, it's a no-brainer to purchase this game -- especially if you're a fan of the God of War series (even if -- like me -- all you've played is the previous God of War PSP game). And if you've never played God of War and you've been looking for a reason to bust out your PSP again, this is the *perfect* excuse to go spend a little bit of money on yourself and break you away from whatever typical life processes may be currently filling your days! In other words, just go buy the game. You won't regret it. =)

5Can't believe it is on PSPJan 05, 2011
By Devendra S. Mistry "d s m"
Having played and loved Chains of Olympus on PSP, this was a must buy for me. After finishing the game once colleting as many upgrades as possible (~10-12h) and attempting the challenge modes afterwards, this is what I thought.

***********PROS***********

ORIGINAL GOD OF WAR EXPERIENCE EXPANDED ON PSP: Yes that means Kratos punishing enemies in the most brutal way possible with his chain blades, climbing/jumping type of platforming and plenty of exploration in ancient greek/roman landscape. This game truly delivers nearly the same experience as on PS2/PS3 God of War games. Quite impressed.

GREAT ARTWORK, ANIMATION AND GRAPHICS: The game looks even better than previous PSP God of war game. I truly can't believe we live in an era where we can enjoy such graphics on a handheld device. Truly astonishing. Also, this game contains very elegantly designed characters, carefully crafted structures and sophistically designed levels. It truly lives up to expectation.

HECK&SLASH GAMEPLAY: Just like in previous PSP God of War, you will be able to pull wide range of combos using dual blades and other weapons. Compare to previous game you have access to more moves. Proper use of these combos will punish your foes in most ruthless manner and will give you bonus orbs (for upgrades) while simply button-mashing will get you killed easily. While the combat is not as strategic as say Devil May Cry games, it still delivers.

WEAPONS, MAGICS AND MORE: As you progress through game in addition to your dual chain blades, you will get access to some unique godly gears and devastating magical powers. Fortunately, these new tools of destruction are not simple rip off from previous god of war games, rather they are quite distinctive entities that when used right can overwhelm your foes or overcome indomitable obstructions. Some of them are quite fun to use.

UPGRADES: Just like previous God of War games, you can upgrade your blades, new weapons and magics giving this game an RPG element. Upgrading your blades unlocks powerful new moves through which you can improve your combos and punish your enemies better while upgrading your magic will give you an edge in battles that would be too difficult otherwise. These upgrades also encourage you to explore each and every corners of the game and do better in battles to get more orbs making the game all the more enjoyable.

GREAT STORY: Previous PSP God of War set up a huge bar in terms of story and I am happy to say the story for this game is even better than previous game. The story takes place between God of War 1 and 2. It has decent amount of twist in it and help you explain many thing that are not explained in God of War 2 and 3. Unfortunately, I can't describe much without spoiling it.

VERY CINEMATIC: This game has some cutscenes that can go head to head with PS2 God of War games. Cutscenes, nicely designed by animators and carefully performed by voice actors, add great depth and drama to the story. Again can't describe much, but the cut scenes towards the end are simply magnificent.

LONGER CAMPAIGN: Very happy to see it has longer campaign than previous PSP God of War. One thing I minded in previous game. So happy they improved it.

UNLOCKABLES: You can unlock Trials and art/video gallery after finishing the game. Trials provide you with challenges and adds length to the gameplay experience. Competing these trials and finishing the game on harder modes unlocks more just like previous god of war games.

*************CONS.*************

LAST BOSS BATTLE AND ENDING: It was pretty good, but I guess, I enjoyed the game so much, I had higher expectation for last boss battle. Don't get me wrong, it was epic, but I wish it was longer and had some punches and depth to it. Same with the ending. It was good and appropriate, but I wish there was more to it.

**************CONCLUSION************

Chains of Olympus established great standards for God of War on PSP and Ghost of Sparta took the experience to the next level. So no complains here. If you like God of War than this game is a must buy for you. This is an experience you must not miss.

The first GOW chains of olypus for PSP was great but this one was even better. Graphics were great, Storyline was awesome. And playing it was just a fun time. Gives you new weapons to choose from and better upgrades. This game is truly worth the money. I would give it 10 out of 10. Just like the gaming magazines did. The only bad thing about the game is that in comparison to the last one this is a little easier to play (beat) and that the storyline is kinda short, but overall the storyline is good and so is the game.
