Good Fun in the Old WestNov 14, 2005

Gun for the XBox lets you become Colton White, the 20-something gunslinger who is out to avenge his father while tracking down a mysterious object.
In essence this is an action-RPG with you moving from mission to mission, learning more as you go, gaining skills and new weapons. Most missions involve shooting down waves of bad guys with your rifle or revolvers. There are numerous side missions, from pony-express relays to poker playing and tracking down wanted men.
The game is pretty typical of its genre. Pony express missions involve "go here! No, go there! Wait, go to a third spot!" within a time limit. Hunt-and-find missions abound. The plot is also pretty standard. You start with Colton and his "dad" out tracking some game. "Dad won't last more than one mission," says I. Sure enough, in the very next area he's slain. Life was cheap in the Old West.
The graphics are sort of a mixed bag. On one hand they don't look "stunning" in some parts, at least as high-quality as you've come to expect from recent XBox releases. On the other hand, sometimes when you're riding your horse across the desert and the sun is setting behind rock formations, it is simply *gorgeous*. I also have to comment that the horse movements are really nicely done. The way the horse's muscles move and the various gaits are right on.
The sound is reasonable. The voice acting isn't bad, and beyond that you just get the shot noises from the various guns. It's not in your face, but really it doesn't need to be. Being in the west was about being in a vast landscape with silence around you.
There were a few glitches with the game. If bad guys were up on the second floor of a building, you could often see their shadows *through the floor* to know where they were. Also, the red dots on the mini-map to point out enemies was nice, but it also gave you a sort of xray vision to pinpoint their locations even if you couldn't visually see them.
I know this is a mature title, but I found the excess of blood spurting and obscene language to be a bit much. This was the Old West, and yes, there was blood. It doesn't need to rain across the entire screen. Yes, they were cussers. But the language they used back then would have been different than some of what they say in the game. I'd much rather have had authentic badmouthing than to have them use some of the nasty phrases the game features.
That all being said, I did have a lot of fun playing this, even if at times it felt a bit like I was Link riding all over Hyrule doing my various quests. We'll have to see what Gun for the XBox 360 is like next!

Fun, but to plainNov 13, 2005

Before this game came out I thought it would be one of the best games of all time. I'm not saying this game is bad, it's just not what I was hopeing for. The gameplay is pretty simple. The levels pretty much just killing whoever the enemy in the area is, moving explosive barrels, tracking a bad guy...those I'm fine with. The story based missions are okay, very well written. The side missions that you do to gain more stats, to me, are stupid. Just the same variation of the same mission over and over. The Pony Express missions pretty much are just picking something up and dropping it off to someone else. The item usually changes, but other than that, just catching a bad guy from a wanted poster.
Graphics aren't bad. The cut scenes are pretty good. Just looks like your normal X-Box game graphics. The controls are easy to learn.
Overall I think the game is pretty fun, but too repetitive. You'd be glad you rented it and didn't buy it, but it's worth the rental just to see if it's your thing.

Ride Into The SunsetAug 26, 2006
By coopertex Gun is a third person shooter for the XBOX. You play a gunslinger out to avenge the death of your father, who was murdered by outlaws. You go From town to town and accomplish missions which propell the story or take a side-quest to earn more money and develope your skills. The best way to describe this game, is Grand Theft Auto meets the old west. You have huge free-roaming levels. First let me get the negatives out of the way. When you travel through towns you will find NPCs (non player characters) walking about, chatting, there is even random crimes taking place. All these are nice touches and add the atmosphere of the gameplay, but the towns feel a bit empty. You will see rivers and lakes in the levels, but you cannot go swimming. Walking to certain areas of the map will be blocked by an invisible barrier; which subtracts from the fantasy. Although the game is free-form, there are a few linear missions, you have to finish through. Negatives aside, GUN this is still excellent and should not discourage you from making a purchase. There has so many fun things to do; you can ride any horse that is not being used, you get an assortment of weapons like, pistols, rifles, shotguns, dynamite and bow with arrows. You can make stealthy kills with a knife and cut people's throats, become a deputy keep the peace in town, be a bounty hunter and bring down outlaws, hunt bears or wolves, do side missions for other characters or just follow the storyline. There are a lot of elements which will remind you of GTA; except of course you're a cowboy instead of a gangster. Shootouts can be bloody at times as you can make headshots and blow people's brains out. Kids should not be playing this; for adults only. Hurting innocent people causes the law to come after you, but killing criminals is loads of fun (no pun intended). GUN can be exciting, or it can also be laid back if you choose to play that way. So if you like old west actions or western movies and wished a good game existed; this is the one for you!
Pros:
+best cowboy game available
+free roaming levels
+excellent story
+excellent voice actors
+excellent level design
+excellent action
+excellent controls
+excellent sound effects
+excellent music
+excellent A.I.
+fun side quests
+weapons can be upgraded
+blood and gore
Cons;
-some towns feel a bit too empty
and needs more people
-some levels are linear
-a few areas have invisible barriers
to prevent you from roaming too much
-you cannot swim.

Exciting but BriefJan 19, 2006

The overall gaming experience was great. The audio and graphics were excellent. The story line was superb but could have been longer. Some of the shortfalls of the game were as follows: I would have liked to experience more ranching quests with other cowboys riding with you instead of by yourself or with the owner of the ranch. A wagon train quest and a train ride quest would have been excellent. More interaction with the town folks would have given the game more debth as well as interacting with the whores in the saloons. The store where you purchased upgrades should have more diverse products similar to Fable as well as more games in the casinos. Overall, I found the game very entertaining and will enjoy replaying the game often. I hope the sequal will be longer and include some of the scenes that I felt would have made the game more enriching.

Gun is an amazing western game with an epic storyline that is thrilling all the way from start to finish.Feb 19, 2006
By gamerdude27 Fun. That is the only way to describe Gun. It's opened ended, free-roaming western experience is truly one of a kind. The game perfectly portrays what life was probably like back in the old west. From bloody shootouts in the streets of Dodge City, to stealthily hunting wolves and bears in the plains and mountains, to riding horseback through Indian territory; Gun offers a one of a kind experience that you have to play to believe.
The gameplay is amazing. Gun puts you in the boots of gunslinger Colton White, a tough guy that is seeking revenge on the men who killed his father. Gun has an epic story running throughout the game. Playing as Colton White, you will get to see what life was like in the bloody west. The game offers both thrilling mission objectives as well as easy, but exciting side missions to earn some extra cash. You will easily know where to go to continue on with the main missions as well as be pointed in the direction of side missions. The main missions offer various objectives, with a wide variety ranging anywhere from basic escort missions to prison breaks. The side missions have a huge variety: taking on a role as a deputy sheriff, riding Pony Express, capturing outlaws for rewards, playing poker in the saloon, herding cattle as a ranch hand, even going on hunting trips. The game is insanely easy on the lower difficulties, so I'd recommend a higher difficulty, that way the game will offer a bit of a challenge. While the game does have a shooting gallery feel to it, you won't get bored with Gun due to the free-roaming gameplay and its huge variety in missions.
The graphics look very good overall. The problem is that they are often hit and miss; they will sometimes look absolutely amazing in detail in some areas, but in others they will seem extremely unpolished. For the most part, they look great. Environments look great and are extremely detailed and full of life. Character models and animations are great. Weapons look and sound excellent. Voice-overs are fantastic, really bringing life to the characters. The main highlight (especially for those of us who have ever ridden a horse) are the horse animations. They are amazingly realistic and move flawlessly fluent and are extremely life-like. It is great to watch the dust kick up from your horse's hooves as you run along. Another thing that I want to take note of are the shadows. Take a minute while you are galloping along on your horse and watch the shadow alongside you; it is amazing to watch how fluently it moves along with the horse's movement; and the shadows just aren't good on the horses, they are also extremely well done on human animations as well. Despite the fact that the graphics are hit and miss at times, it is amazing that the developers could put so much meticulous detail into such a large spanning environment, and I therefore rate Gun higher in the graphics department. It is just amazing that the framerate never stutters.
Sound effects are great in the game. From gun shots ringing through the streets to arrows piercing through the air. It is all extremely well done. All the weapons sound awesome. Animal noises also sound great. Voice-overs are fantastic. It is amazing that the developers could find this talented of a group to do voice-overs. Overall, the sound is awesome and really takes advantage of Dolby 5.1 surround sound.
It is too bad that developers couldn't spend some more time making the single-player game longer. The game is really short and should take you anywhere from 10 to 12 hours to finish. The game luckily offers some replayability which does add some extra value to the game. But due to Gun's short length and lack of bonus features, the value level is lower. But I would personally recommend buying this game over just a rental because I think it is a game worthy enough to be added to your collection.
Gun is insanely addicting due to the epic storyline. The game will pull you in and definitely keep you hooked from start to finish. The pure fun of playing through the story and completing side missions will keep you coming back for more, making Gun an amazing game.
I just thought I should throw this in as a warning notice: DO NOT PLAY IF YOU ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 17. The ESRB notice does not lie on this game. Gun is extremely bloody and violent. It contains strong language that is not suitable for children. I guess you could consider this as being gritty and uncensored. So if you are a parent looking to buy this game for your kid, I would recommend looking elsewhere.
Gun is one of those insanely fun games that is hard to describe. The open-ended, free-roaming style of gameplay is amazing and extremely well done. The epic storyline running through its roots is reason enough to buy this game. With the perfect combination of excellent gameplay, stunning graphics, excellent sound effects, and extremely high tilt level, Gun is truly a one of a kind experience that you must play in order to believe. The only thing now is for you to saddle up and to get ready for the most exciting ride of your life as you play as Colton White through one of the most stunning, thrilling, and emotionally captivating video games of all time.
