4Battle Network 7Aug 16, 2007
By E. David Swan
As a longtime fan of the Battle Network series and owner of all six previous games (which I played the heck out of) I feel fairly qualified in commenting on the latest evolution in the series. The name has changed and all the characters have been replaced but it's clearly Battle Network and it would be absurd not to compare it to the previous iterations. Let me start by saying that my initial reaction was concern. I hate the name Starforce, the font on the cover art looks cheap and dated and I quickly found a couple syntactical errors in the story text. However, once I got into it I was increasingly impressed by the quality of the production. First I'll address the nuts and bolts.

There are cosmetic changes and gameplay changes but perhaps the biggest alteration is in the battlefield. The three quarters top down view has been replaced by a 3D straight on shot with a three by five grid reducing the real estate by one row from previous games. Megaman sits in the near row while enemies have four to move around in. Is this an improvement? Maybe not. It creates a claustrophobic feel in battles although some weapons like swords have become significantly easier to use thanks to the new lock-on feature. After awhile the updated battle arena began to grow on me.

There are no longer different letter versions of battle chips which simplifies the game, it just doesn't improve it. Program Customizers have been replaced with Brotherbands that offer Megaman new abilities but without the customizations of the Battle Network series. The biggest killer is the removal of Program Advancements which were, in my opinion, the best part of the Battle Network game. There is a new feature called battle combos that I suppose replaces the PA's but the feature seems rather awkwardly designed.

Starforce has a lot of short sidequests although the rewards tend to be likewise small. The core game has a slight graphical upgrade and a decent if rather unfocussed story (what Battle Network game doesn't). Although the backgrounds are all redone the environment is pretty much the same as Battle Network with a small neighborhood, a school and a bus to other cities. It all boils down to collecting chips/creating folders and battling Navi's. I love it but I can't fault other who find it tiresome after 6 previous games.

My biggest issue with the Battle Network/Starforce series is the lack of continuity and what I mean by that is the ability to trade between iterations. It's disappointing to spend so much time collecting battle chips only to get the next in the series and have to collect the same ones all over again. This is probably the main reason that a site like IGN.com gave Starforce a dismal 5.2 rating. The worst thing is that the series actually did this at one point. You could trade `retro chips' between Battle Network 1 and 2. If you pop a previous version of Battle Network into the DS and perform some tasks in Starforce you can get a special weapon but the weapon is rather mediocre and the player will likely only use it for a short time before something better comes along. Pretty weak. I will continue to harp on this issue until it's corrected. It is the one glaring weakness of the series.

Reviews can (and have) slammed the series but there must be something in it to have such a loyal and active fan base. As of this writing Megaman has 3 of the top 7 DS FAQ's on gamefaqs.com and 3 of the top 5 DS message boards which are exceedingly active. Despite my complaints I thoroughly enjoyed the game. My problem isn't that the series didn't change enough. My beef is that they changed some of the strongest elements. If Capcom ever does retro chips again I'll give the game 5 stars until the 4 is the best I can do.

5A humble start for this seriesFeb 07, 2012

Mega Man Star Force is the spiritual successor to the Mega Man Battle Network series for the Game Boy Advance. If you played and enjoyed Battle Network, you will like Star Force. Simple enough. Yes, there are quite a few things that are different, but fundamentally it's the same. The characters are still pixelated sprites, the art style is the same, the music style is the same.
If you like Battle Network, you will like Star Force. Buy it.

For everyone else who didn't play Battle Network, read on.

You play Geo Stelar - though you can change both your first and last name, nice touch - a boy of about 10. Bad stuff happened before the beginning of the game, but you find out about that stuff early on. After some setting up of the plot, you become the Blue Bomber, and you begin your reluctant adventures. Spoiler: Friendship is the most powerful force in all the cosmos, but again, you figure that out soon enough.
Tutorials are very important in a game, particularly the first in a series. Mercifully, the game doesn't treat the player like an idiot, trusting that moving around and examining the environment is intuitive enough. Other overworld controls - menu, pulsing in and out, etc. - are taught very quickly through dialogue.
Soon enough, you find yourself fighting stuff. Combat takes place on a grid, 5 rows of 3 squares. Enemies have ready access to most of the grid, but you are kinda limited to only the first row, meaning you can only move left and right. I threw in that "kinda" because you're able to lock-on to enemies when you're positioned right, so you can zip in, use a sword or punch or whatever, then zip right back to where you were. Again, the tutorials shine, showing you how to be pro in a matter of minutes. One word of advice: Don't forget that you have access to a shield at all times.
The narrative is overly simplistic and gets sappy at times, but fairly well executed. You can zip through the dialogue, or even skip whole scenes. Very handy if you feel like playing through more than once.
The world you run around in isn't as open or sprawling as I like, however, there is a sense of urgency and always having something to do that is kept up all throughout, so it never feels like there's time spent doing nothing.

Bottom line: If you like Mega Man in general, pick up Star Force. Really, if you have a DS, you can't really go wrong with Star Force

4NOT Battle Network, but has similar elementsSep 26, 2009

When we see this game, most will think, "oh, Battle Network with 3d battles"
WRONG. (though I did love BN)

I too thought this, until I decided I needed a new Mega Man game. saw this, picked it up, and started playing.
Immediatly I noticed a difference, with been able to name Geo Stelar whatever you want (censoring is on people) both first and last name, Geo's personality contrasting Lan's which in my opinion was an improvement and I found Lan to be quite thick headed and abnoxous. Sure some characters merely seem like replacements, but it doesnt bug you enough to hate the game.

As I continued I saw other improvements. remember those annoying "find this person here" objectives and only getting "I think we should find those people Lan" as your only help? well, they still exist, but they arent so rediculous or vague, as in BN. making the game much more smooth and enjoyable.

Another thing I liked was the battles, which are much more fast paced and more intense than BN. my only complaint is that the bosses tend to have moves that take up all of your spots and if you dont have a Battle card your kinda screwed over.

The story is a little more put together than BN's randomness. but not by much.

The characters seem to actually develop and gradually change as the story goes, making them more lifelike and likable than Lan, Mayl, and them.

The brother Band System is a nice touch, allowing you to essentially create a profile and Avatar icon much like Mario Kart's icon maker.

Its just a shame theres no wifi battles in this one. would of given it a 5 if it had.

Overall, buy this if you are looking for a change from Battle Network, but still love the style of the old series.
