Great PC style game for the X-box 360May 29, 2010

I just finished this game and I have to say that it brought back memories of some really great PC based video games. Lots of fun, interesting puzzles, engaging characters, excellent graphics and just a great game. I would recommend this one to anyone who likes murder mystery and puzzle solving games, or, is just a "Jack the Ripper" or Sherlock Homes/Dr. Watson buff. Buy it, try it, you'll agree.

It could be worseFeb 18, 2012
By Impala It's often hard to know what to make of the reviews of games like this. There are people who hate anything that isn't an action shooter so reading the reviews is like solving a mystery, are the bad reviews from people who hate the game because it's bad or are they people who would hate any point and click puzzle solver, i.e. they hate the genre? So I'll start by saying I really wanted to like this game, I like the Sherlock Holmes books, I like puzzles, I wish they would make more of these type games for consoles. Still the game was a disappointment and although I enjoyed some of the puzzles I was glad when it was finished.
In the opening scene Holmes is smoking cigarettes with yellow filter tips. It should be common sense that filtered cigarettes have no place in the 1880's. That doesn't inspire confidence in the people who came up with the puzzles, perhaps it was intentionally put in as a clue that this game was badly designed. More inaccuracies follow and while I'm not one to nitpick such things this sloppiness is relevant because it also manifests itself in the design of the puzzles.
Voice acting is another thing I normally don't care about but the voice and accent of Holmes in this game is identical to that of Stewie, the baby from the cartoon Family Guy.
At times the dialogue in the subtitles has mistakes or differs slightly from what is said by the character. More sloppiness.
In some of the puzzles elements are small and poorly rendered. I've got a 42 inch plasma set and had to get up for a closer look a few times. Good luck with a small tube set. There was no reason for this other then sloppy design.
Up until now all my complaints have been minor but here is the serious problem with the game. The puzzles are often poorly explained or not explained at all and sometimes counter intuitive. The help button is never helpful in explaining your objective. If you knew what the puzzle wanted from you, you could work towards solving it but you don't so you end up using trial and error or consulting a guide. Trial and error is no fun and if you look at a guide the answer is given away along with the explanation so you miss out on solving a puzzle that may have been fun.
I don't want to give anything away so all I'll say about the plot is that it's mediocre at best, the ending is unsatisfying and has a mime scene set to music that is strange and out of place.
So should you buy this game? Since it's inexpensive maybe you should, if you love puzzle games and your expectations aren't too high you may enjoy it or at least parts of it. It's also an easy 1000 achievement points if you care about racking them up.

Best suspense detective gameJan 19, 2011

for one i loved the feel of the game. sure you didn't get to drive a car, and sure you really can't interact with people unless they are part of your objective but its still fun. I think its funny and serious at the same time. This game does offer you to learn alittle about who jack the ripper was. Though noone was caught in the actual murders you learn that he was after a certain type of female. This game is great for anyone who wants a challenge from games like csi which are pretty much straight forward. I give it two thumbs up. Only buy it if you want a challenge because it can be hard. But i thought it was worth it.

DisappointedNov 20, 2011
By otter372 I love Sherlock Holmes, but I do not like the voice chosen to portray him. Neither do I care for the script. There is a lot the character says that I seriously doubt Holmes would say. Holmes never was much of a talker, as Watson has pointed out in many adventures.
I also find the camera angles weird to control. I have spent way too much time trying to figure out what the heck i am missing so I can continue to the next piece of the game. But there is no indication as to what I need to do. I also find it frustrating that to get one clue, I have to do 20 favors for people (one leads to another, in order to get another, to get another, and so on...).
There a lot of glitches in the rendering too that makes it distracting and feels like it wasn't quite finished/complete before they produced it.
Overall, I am disappointed in the game. It's more frustrating than exciting. I feel obligated to finish it so I can move on to a new game.
On the plus side, I rather enjoyed the lock combination on the briefcase. That part was fun!

Who loves Holmes? We do!Jan 12, 2012
By Hayley Corbin This game is for logical thinkers and puzzle solvers for sure, if your not into that kind of thing you'll get most likely get irked at some point, as some of the puzzles are very hard to do. Also, to anyone looking for a 'Sherlock Holmes beating up all the bad guys' this game is NOT for you. This is a more classical take on Holmes, there's no judo-Holmes here folks.
