Though be aware before purchasing that the genre classification for this game is "puzzle" and the difficulty level is, in my estimation, "hard." Even though this is a port of an old 16 bit game, on the GBA the graphics are excellent, the sound is good ... and well, hey, it's a Blizzard game! The Lost Vikings has taken over my GBA and I am delighted!

The best game of all timeMay 19, 2003

I have yet to play the gameboy advanced version, but I know that this is one of the best games ever. It has a very unique plot and set up. It is a challenging game, but it isn't too challenging. In this game, you have to use the unique abilities of Erik the Swift, (the fast one and the one who can jump and bash walls down with his head) Baleog the fierce, (the one with the sword and the bow and arrow) and Olaf the stout, (the fat one who's shield not only blocks enemies, but can provide a boost for Erik, and will allow him to float). Each character can hold up to four items, like health, and keys, and can trade an item to one another if one can't use it. With great graphics, great idea and plot, great format, and great challenges, this is a game that you will want to play over and over again, no matter how many times you've beatten it.

I remember playing this game on my Genesis years ago, and thankfully The Lost Vikings has been brought to the GBA almost seamlessly. You control a trio of vikings named Erik, Olaf, and Baleog; all of whom have been abducted by aliens and dropped into room after room after room of obstacles containing everything from enemies, traps, keys, secrets, and more. To navigate through the challenging 37 levels you must control all three vikings as a team to perform different tasks. All three vikings also feature their own unique abilities that will come in handy during the game. This feature was what attracted me to The Lost Vikings all those years ago, it was different and challenging, and it was a pretty fun game overall. The graphics are nearly identical to it's 16 bit counterparts and doesn't take on the GBA's horsepower at all. The audio is average GBA fodder with a few humerous soundbytes, but the control is pretty tight though it will take time to master when you need to make quick second decisions in the game. What's disappointing about this GBA coversion of The Lost Vikings is that there aren't any extras or multiplayer features that would have made the game even more fun. All in all, those who enjoyed the original Lost Vikings game will get a kick out of this, but younger gamers probably won't like it as much.

Now I have to be honest here, and tell you all that I had never even heard about this game until I started to see reviews and "Greatest gba games of all times" awards on sites like GameSpy and IGN.

It's also made by one of my all-time favorite game developers: Blizzard (of World of WarCraft, WarCraft 2 and 3 and StarCraft fame; then known as "Silicon and Synapse") you see, this gba title is apparently the port of a snes title from way back when. (Which explains why I've never heard of it: I didn't get my hands on a SNES until high school, still have it, tho.)

One part platformer, and three parts puzzler, Lost vikings will have you pulling out your hair at the difficulty of the game, but it's one of those, "Gotta try again" types of games.

The Lost Vikings puts players in full control of three Vikings lifted out of their cozy Norwegian village by an alien who's looking to add a few new humans to its collection. But these Vikings are extremely skilled, each one honing a few special techniques of his own.

Erik the Swift is the fastest and the only Viking that can jump. Baelog the Fierce wields weaponry, both up close and distance. And Olaf the Stout carries around a shield that can block most projectiles, and lets him glide to safety if he holds it above his head. Players can only overcome the specific obstacles by having the Vikings work together. If even one Viking bites it during the level, players will have to restart since they can't finish a level without all three Vikings at the exit. Luckily, if a Viking takes a hit from an enemy, or takes a short tumble, they can replenish the lost health point with found fruit and meat in a specific level; but if a Viking hits electricity or falls too far, it's a one-hit death.

No freakin' kidding! While this game is my cup of tea, and strongly reminds me of Exit for the psp, this game has me pulling out fistfulls of hair when one LOUSY, STINKIN' VIKING takes ONE LOUSY, STINKIN' fall or gets hit by electricity, then it's level restart for me! ARGH! you see, if you lost one of the three viking brothers, you can't finish the level, as you are required to get them all safely to the exit.

While frustrating in some parts, the game also has me laughing out loud at the facial expressions the vikings make (run Erik into a wall and watch his face!) or the comments and quibbles they have between each other..and just wait till they address you, the player, when you screw up one too many levels! neat twist!

I am having a great time playing it, though, and it's always with me in my gba sp or the gba slot of my ds.

I found this game when I was searching for a "viking" type of game for my husband.....who is 6'7, Swedish and usually loves ANYTHING having to do with vikings. I had never heard of this game before .....but I saw some reviews on other sites for this game and was surprised at how highly rated it was. I bought a cartridge and my hubby didn't care for the graphics....as he plays the PSP and Wii and cares for more realistic looking games.

HOWEVER...I decided to play The Lost Vikings myself and let me tell ya....this game is NOT easy!! You are playing as 3 vikings who each have their own talents, and you have to play each level inter-changing them to make it past obstacles. For example : One viking carries a shield. He usually has to walk in front of the other vikings in case of an attack. Another viking carries a sword and a bow. That one usually has to stand BEHIND the one with the shield and shoot the attackers. The third viking is the only one with the ability to jump...and also to knock down walls. He usually picks up the keys and extra health foods if they are on higher shelves that the others cannot get to. I'll admit, I bought this game used (without the directions) so it took me a while to figure out the controls. The frustrating thing about this game (for ME anyway) is that you need ALL 3 vikings alive to pass to the next level. If even 1 dies....you may as well quit the level and start it over again. You won't be able to finish with just 2 vikings. The commentary in this game is a riot :). If you lose a level 15 times in a row (and BELIEVE ME...it WILL happen), the voice (just words in a bubble) of Thor chastises you for your pitiful performance. And occasionally the vikings will make little snippy comments to each other.

This game was an unexpected find....a pleasant surprise....and a good choice for someone is looking for a GBA game that isn't super easy, but instead challenging and fun.
