Just not up to XBox 360 standardsJan 22, 2006

Tony Hawk's skateboarding games are by now a classic style of gameplay. The XBox 360 should have kicked up the graphics to a new level. It didn't quite make it.
The game really annoyed me right from the start. You're a country yokel heading off to the bright lights and big city of Los Angeles. Apparently according to this game, LA is the one dream destination of every skater.
You get to choose your character from all the "stereotype races" - i.e. white, black, hispanic, oriental. But they are ALL MALE. What's up with this?? Other games let you customize your character to the Nth degree. Here you can't even change your GENDER.
OK you choose your guy, get dropped off in a relatively tiny map area where you can change your hairstyle and shirt/pants through a few choices. Then you get little mini-missions to do - earn cash, learn tricks, meet challenges, and so on. There's some wry humor in here, such as throwing darts at the oh-so-easy-to-harass Ben Affleck. Does the guy really deserve this much harassment? Sexy girls are around to flirt with you, and save-the-sheep protesters chant monotonously.
The moves are fun and easy to master - hopping on rails, spinning in circles, taking advantage of pretty much everything you can see. You can smash glass and tag the walls with your mark.
That being said, it got old pretty quickly for us. The graphics just weren't stellar. The dialogue got redundant. The missions were often very vague and you had to retry them a few times to figure out exactly what they wanted out of you. It's a great game to rent first. If you really love it, by all means buy it! But if you play it for a week and have finished the game, then it might be time to move on to something new.

It's more then it's made out to be!Dec 10, 2005
By Bradley Bouchard Yes the graphics are subpar for a next-gen system but, This game is extremly fun, not to mention that there are many more tricks plus bmx, so don't listen to the bad try it for yourself.
AMAZING!Oct 25, 2007
By Media Lover This is an incredible game. The graphics are beautiful, the sound is sharp, and the levels are well designed. Another high point is the extremely addictive gameplay (so prominent in every Tony Hawk title.) I've played THPS 1, 2, and 4, THUG 2, and Project 8, although this is my first Hawk gaming experience on the Xbox 360. The graphics (despite this being the 7th out of 9 in the Tony Hawk series) are about the best I have seen so far... Of course this is because I've only played the previous games on PS2, Gamecube and N64. Despite this fact, this is wonderful.
The game is comprised of a classic mode (in which you complete classic challenges like collect SKATE, find the hidden tape, and achieve a sick score) and a story mode (much like the quite hilarious Underground 2.
BOTTOM LINE
If you are a teen looking for an amazing gaming experience, grab THAW for the 360 and be blown away.
WAY too unrealistic. I miss the old games..Sep 03, 2007
By Daniel Crawford I have been playing the Tony Hawk games since THPS 1 and loved it all the way up to THUG... But after the release of THUG they're just going downhill. I rented THUG 2 for the xbox and i felt like i was a clown with all the crazy, impossible stunts i was doing. I got American Wasteland because it was only 18 bucks and i thought it would be more fun on the 360. I found myself jumping backwards and running up walls as much as i was actually on my baord skating at 50 mph doing 9874 degree backflips. I don't see how that makes the game any better, honestly. The graphics are a little better and even though project 8 is out i still find people online most of the time. I also got my gamerscore up a good bit from this game too. Rather than buying this game, however i suggest buying "Skate" by EA. This game is EXTREAMLY realistic and you actually feel good when you land a double kickflip off a rail. Personally though if you feel the need to play a tony hawk game, id just play tony hawk 4 or THUG because at least i dont find myself accidently doing backflips when i just want to slow down like in American Wasteland. Overall i think it's still a fun game for people who are new to the series so i can't just give it 1 star. However i got bored with it after the second time i played it.
great addition to the seriesDec 04, 2006
By A+ Reviewer The graphics might not be the best out there, but this game is fun! This is just as entertaining as any other Tony Hawk game in the series. If you are planning on doing the absolute minimum requirents and playing 10 hours a day, then I guess you could say this game is really short. I play casually and actually try to accomplish all the extra goals and I didn't find this game short at all. Now that the price is down from $60, I would definitely give this game a shot if you are a fan of the TH series.
